Four persons including a woman and her baby have been confirmed dead in a bomb attack in Biu, Borno state this morning. According to a statement by the Nigerian Army, at about 8.15am today a tricycle, known as “Keke NAPEP” unknowingly stepped on an Improvise Explosive Device (IED) planted by the side of Biu -Damboa road close to a military checkpoint at the outskirts of Biu town, Borno State.

Army arrests suspected members of Niger Delta Avengers

The Nigerian Army says it has arrested 10 suspected members of the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, which had claimed responsibility for the destruction of oil and gas installations in the region in recent times. The Commander of the 4 Brigade, Brigadier-General Farouk Yahaya, who paraded the suspects in Benin, Edo State today May 29th, disclosed that‎ several items were recovered from the arrested suspects.

The suspects were arrested in Oporaza, the headquarters of Gbaramatu kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, following a cordon and search operation conducted in the community.

Items recovered from the suspects to include 28 detonator cords (also known Detonator 33), one pistol, two empty pistol magazines, 196 rounds of 7.62 special ammunition, one round of nine-millimetre ‎ammunition, a live cartridge and five daggers.

One confirmed dead in building collapse in Ogun

One of the workers at the site of the yet-to-be completed shopping mall that partially collapsed in Itokun, Ogun state earlier today has been confirmed dead. According to a press release from the state government, site engineers had confirmed that a total of 16 workers were on duty at the building site, which was still under construction as at the time of the unfortunate incident on Friday morning.

Statement from the office of the Vice President on fuel pricing debate

Fellow Citizens: 
I have read the various observations about the fuel pricing regime and the attendant issues generated. All certainly have strong points.  
The most important issue of course is how to shield the poor from the worst effects of the policy.  I will hopefully address that in another note.
Permit me an explanation of the policy. First, the real issue  is not a removal of subsidy. At $40 a barrel there isn't much of a subsidy to remove.
