Ekiti road transport chief sent to prison custody over murder of NURTW chief

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates' court in Ekiti State, on Monday, ordered that a former chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Ekiti State, Mr Olabiwwonnu Joseph, more popularly known as Mentilo, be remanded in prison custody over alleged murder.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Bankole Olasunkanmi, had told the court in a hearing on Monday that the accused committed the offence on September 25, 2014 in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The police also alleged that the accused, on the said date, "unlawfully conspired to murder and murdered the late former Ekiti State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chief, Mr Omolafe Aderiye."

According to him,the offence contravened sections 324 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State,2012.

Bankole said he had duplicated the case file and sent to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The accused plea was not taken as his counsel, Mr Niran Owoseni, sought for a date of adjournment till the outcome of the DPP's advice.

Chief Magistrate, Idowu Ayenimo, consequently remanded the accused in prison custody and adjourned the case till July 31 for mention.
